Hello

My name is Casey Petterson and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor living in Denver, CO. I am a Kansas native but I have lived in Colorado with my husband for nearly a decade.

I received a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2020. I have worked with a variety of clients in group practice and have experience doing career counseling in the university setting.

When I'm not working, I love to rest, play, and be with other humans. For rest, I enjoy books (I'm a sucker for a good memoir or rom com!), sleeping in, leisurely walks with my partner, or watching a funny show. For play, I like to hike, play music, bake, consume beautiful meals, and explore new cities. As for other humans, one of my absolute favorite things is to sit around the dinner table in my home while enjoying good company and tasty food.

Approach

My Approach

First and foremost, I want to create space for my clients to feel heard and understood. It's tough to show up and talk to a stranger about your deepest emotions, but as the therapeutic relationship develops, so does your capacity for vulnerability. I believe that each person is an expert on themselves, no one will ever know more about you than you! My job is to act as a gentle guide and resource as you navigate your story and healing journey. When appropriate, I will compassionately offer insights, challenges, and reflections to support your process.

I like to address health through physical/psychological/emotional/spiritual angles. All of these elements are deeply intertwined and I explore each of them with my clients as they relate to individual goals. Humans tend to store a lot of emotional pain in their physical bodies. I frequently use mindful awareness and breath-work to help client's connect to their bodies and emotions, making way for healing and greater well-being.

Limiting beliefs and thinking patterns are also stored in our bodies and often start from a young age. These beliefs may be solidified over time as we experience distressing life events that greatly impact the way we feel about ourselves. Once I have established a therapeutic connection with my clients, we will dig into some of these thinking patterns that are no longer helpful. I may use talk therapy, EMDR, Ego States Therapy or various other modalities depending on the client's needs and readiness.

What do I need from you?

If you are ready to take the first step in therapy, all I need from you is your willingness to do this work. The effectiveness of this process relies on your ability to be open and honest about what you're feeling and the areas of growth you would like to pursue. As your therapist, I will be here to provide a grounded, non-judgmental, and empathic presence during your process. If you decide this is for you, I would be honored to walk with you and hold a part of your story.

Commitment to Inclusion

I work to provide culturally competent care for whomever I come in contact with in my therapy practice. I am committed to continual learning and growth in this area. If I feel that I am lacking in competency regarding a client or marginalized group the client is a part of, I will seek consultation and wisdom from someone with the appropriate expertise.

While I welcome all people to my practice, I am limited in my training and expertise. If I feel that a client would receive more appropriate care through another skilled clinician, I will provide a prompt referral.

I am committed to seeing each client as an individual person with unique experiences, while also taking into account the larger systems at play. My greatest hope is that clients would experience safety within the counseling context and not intensified burden. It is a privilege and an honor to be trusted with each person's story.
